Bedard and Keegan II

circa 1973 or 1974

(who is counting?)

“The objective for the program and the objective set for each team is to persevere to the end of the route.”

Ted Byfield – Monday, February 12, 1962

How many snowshoes did Doug Austin and Goodlin Phillips refurbish in the bowels of the Stone Building? To think of the amount of bent, steamed wood and “catgut” tied and lacquered. The fumes! This is one of my favorite pdfs on bedard.com. It’s enough for me to dust off my Chestnut snowshoes, remember how to tie up the lampwick, and run down the Father Turney on my way to Matlock via the tracks.

I have vague remembrances of this race. It took much longer than the races of the full time school. I don’t recall much of any practise runs. I wish I could find some of the moccasins we would wear but it appears they have gone into history.
