Sports Entertainment: MMA, Wrestling and the Law

M. Maurice “Mad Dog” Vachon.

This paper focuses the lens of the law to sports entertainment and explores how regulations, contract law, and intellectual property impact the business. I wrote this in 2008 while studying law at Santa Clara University. The quality or lack thereof should not reflect on the institution. I learned as much as I could while working full time and going to school at night.

An industry insider, someone who has hung with Dana White, read this paper and enjoyed it which is good enough validation for me. I’ve thought about updating to 2022, so please read this in the context that it was written almost fourteen years ago when regulations were fast changing and MMA was coming into its own. MMA was just starting to get into the sports entertainment mainstream when I wrote this paper. I have not attempted to revise it or comment on it since I published it. It stands as it stands.
